Online doctor appraisal: how it works and what to prepare
Written by Dr Sudhir Tapase, GMC appraiser · Published 2 November 2026
An online appraisal is the same GMC appraisal you would have in person, held by video call. This guide explains how it works and what to have ready.
Yes, provided it is a face-to-face discussion, in person or by video link. The GMC does not accept appraisals completed by telephone only for doctors without a designated body. See REV12 form explained. If you have a responsible officer, ask them whether an independent appraisal is acceptable before you book.
- Book and pay online. Choose a slot on the fees page and confirm securely by card.
- Meet by video. We meet on Microsoft Teams or Google Meet at your booked time. Evenings and weekends are available.
- Receive your outputs. Your appraisal documentation is completed on my secure online appraisal portal.
Bring the six types of supporting information the GMC expects:
- continuing professional development;
- quality improvement activity;
- significant events;
- feedback from patients;
- feedback from colleagues;
- complaints and compliments.
Also have ready:
- a description of your whole scope of practice, including any work outside the NHS;
- your last personal development plan (PDP), if you have one;
- your reflections on what you have learned.
The revalidation checklist lists each item, and our MSF service can organise colleague and patient feedback.
- Use a quiet, private room, since appraisals discuss confidential material.
- Test your camera, microphone and connection beforehand.
- Keep your documents open on screen, or have them to hand.
- Have a backup plan, such as a phone for the audio, in case the connection drops.
Your appraisal outputs are completed on the portal. If you need the REV12 form, it is an optional £50 add-on.
Standard £550; short-notice (within 48 hours) £700. See what a medical appraisal costs.
