How much does a medical appraisal cost in the UK?
Written by Dr Sudhir Tapase, GMC appraiser · Published 31 October 2026
The cost of a medical appraisal depends on who provides it. Many doctors pay nothing directly, because their employer or designated body arranges their appraisal. Others use an independent appraiser and pay a fee. This guide explains both.
Under the GMC’s rules, a doctor with a responsible officer (RO) has their appraisal arranged through their designated body, and must use the appraisal system provided unless the RO asks them to use an alternative. If that applies to you, ask your RO before booking anything independently. See independent medical appraisal.
If you have no RO or suitable person, you are responsible for arranging your own annual appraisal. The GMC says it must be carried out by a licensed doctor who meets its appraiser criteria, and your appraiser completes the REV12 form for your annual return. Our revalidation checklist and guide to revalidating without a responsible officer set this out.
- Standard appraisal: £550. The full GMC appraisal meeting and completed documentation, booked with standard notice.
- Short-notice appraisal: £700. For appraisals needed within 48 hours.
- REV form completion: £50. An optional add-on alongside a booked appraisal, for completing the GMC’s REV12 appraiser report form. It is a lengthy form, and doctors without a responsible officer or suitable person send it to the GMC with their annual return.
All fees are paid online at the time of booking, and no additional charges are listed beyond these. See the fees page to book.
Prices vary between providers, so compare like with like:
